A Personalized Approach to Modern Glaucoma Treatment

Uncategorized

Mid Florida Eye Center

Managing glaucoma successfully requires more than checking eye pressure and prescribing medication. At our locations in Mount Dora, Leesburg, The Villages, and Summerfield, patients have access to personalized glaucoma care that may include prescription eye drops, laser treatment, and minimally invasive procedures. These options allow treatment to be tailored to each patient’s eyes, lifestyle, and risk of vision loss.

Why Glaucoma Requires Ongoing Care

Glaucoma gradually damages the optic nerve, often because of increased pressure within the eye. Since this damage is permanent, the goal of treatment is to lower eye pressure and slow or prevent additional vision loss.

The disease frequently develops without pain or noticeable changes during its early stages. Regular comprehensive eye exams and glaucoma testing are important, especially for patients with a family history of glaucoma or other risk factors.

Finding an Approach That Works for the Patient

Prescription eye drops are commonly used to reduce eye pressure. They may work by decreasing fluid production or helping fluid drain from the eye. However, drops must be used consistently to provide the intended benefit.

For some patients, maintaining a daily medication schedule can be difficult. Others may experience irritation, have trouble placing drops in their eyes, or need several medications. In these situations, an ophthalmologist may discuss interventional glaucoma treatments that can provide another way to manage eye pressure.

Lowering Pressure With SLT

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, or SLT, is a laser procedure that improves the flow of fluid through the eye’s natural drainage system. It is performed in the office and does not require surgical incisions.

SLT may offer several benefits:

For eligible patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension, SLT may be considered as an initial treatment. It may also be used when eye drops are difficult to manage or are not providing enough pressure reduction.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, often shortened to MIGS, includes several procedures designed to improve eye pressure control. Depending on the procedure, MIGS may enhance natural drainage, create another pathway for fluid, or reduce the eye’s fluid production.

Potential advantages include:

MIGS is often considered for eligible patients who are undergoing cataract surgery. Addressing glaucoma during cataract surgery may provide an additional opportunity to control eye pressure. However, some patients may need other treatments or traditional glaucoma surgery to reach a safer pressure.

Protecting Vision Through Proactive Care

An effective glaucoma plan begins with a careful evaluation of the optic nerve, eye pressure, peripheral vision, and previous treatment results. Your ophthalmologist will use this information to recommend medication, SLT, MIGS, traditional surgery, or a combination of treatments.

Glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can often be controlled. Proactive care can help protect your optic nerve and preserve your sight. Call us today to book your exam.
