A History of Firsts

• Mid Florida Eye Center helped pioneer innovations in small-incision/no-stitch cataract surgery and implant technology, which are the gold standard of eye surgeons around the world.
• Mid Florida Eye Center helped develop foldable lens implants, and become the first in Central Florida to introduce multi-focal implants that correct for distance and near vision.
• Mid Florida Eye Center is among the first ophthalmology practices in Central Florida to introduce premium intraocular lenses for cataract patients.
• Dr. Jeffrey Baumann and Dr. Gregory Panzo opened the area's first accredited outpatient surgery center specifically for eyes, (spotlighted among the best in the nation by Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today), and in 2008 opened the first eye surgery facility in The Villages.
• Mid Florida Eye Center participated in clinical trials of treatments for glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other sight-threatening conditions.
• Mid Florida Eye Center physicians taught other physicians nationally and internationally in techniques, including cataract surgery, LASIK, and BotoxB.
• Dr. Jeffrey Baumann was the first ophthalmologist in Central Florida to introduce accommodating and multi-focal implants that correct for distance and near vision.
• Dr. Jeffrey Baumann, one of the most experienced cataract surgeons in the nation, has taught cataract surgery with implants to ophthalmology residents.
• Dr. Jeffrey Baumann was named principal investigator and was one of only four physicians in the U.S. selected to participate in a clinical trail of a new astigmatism-correcting intraocular lens implant.
• Dr. Gregory Panzo was the first physician in Central Florida to safely reduce inner eye pressure in patients with certain types of glaucoma by using selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).
• Dr. Ray Maizel introduced new diagnostic ICG therapy to detect abnormalities of the arteries and veins of the retina.
• Dr. Ray Maizel also was one of the first to introduce Macugen, shown to slow or even halt some types of progressive vision loss associated with macular degeneration
• Dr. Stacia Goldey. who has more than 15 years of experience performing the FDA-approved BotoxB. procedure to reduce facial wrinkles, was one of the first surgeons in the region to use Restylane, Juvederm, and CO2 and fractional lasers for the treatment of wrinkles and skin lesions.
• Dr. Stacia Goldey was the first oculoplastic surgeon in Lake County.
